HTC Vive tiltbrush is pretty wicked

Got my hands on The HTC VIVE VR headset+controllers and google app Tiltbrush, and started playing with it in the office at IO Entertainment. Its nuts.. Drawing and painting, sculpting in VR. Every time I read about or try VR/AR/3D/STEREO it feels clunky and gimmicky. Tiltbrush still feels like a toy/game, but the possibilities begin to shine through and I can't put it down.
I'm wondering about its place in a production environment, the prospects with new tools becoming available giving us the ability to export models to maya, this makes me pretty excited. The ability to judge a design by walking around a rough VR sketch is undeniably useful.

I'm missing a ton of functionality in Tiltbrush from other professional 3d applications and photoshop, but I'm sure its only a question of time.

Another thing is the pricetag for the Vive.. too steep for any freelance artists to be able to take advantage of it in its current form.
I hope the hololens will have a similar function, being able to still see your real environment and share with others will be amazing. The future is looking pretty cool..

Here are some my first sketches in Tiltbrush sped up x2. *warning heavy breathing*

And export test for production environment.

wander + stuff

Experienting with painting more 'straight up' and not rely so much on brushes/selections photoshop trickery (ok.. a bit of trickery...) but manly just focusing on painting. Very chill. I find it a lot easier with a bush set to low flow, though it makes fuzzy outlines.
Hope you enjoy!

Life Drawings

Bunch from the last couple of months, been trying to go every week. Realized I've been drawing on the same type of sketchbook with the same type of pencil for 3 years for all life drawing I've done.. I guess its a good exercise to really simplify and just stick with it for practice, but it might have become too rigid.

I've seen so many people who uses loads of different materials and creates beautiful personal expressive work, much more interesting than my (daresay borderline purist...) technical exercises..
Might have to play around with that a bit more. Good fun tho, if you are looking to get drawing, I can't recommend it enough!

MAWK-1

Caught a bit of a break this week after finishing up storyboarding on set for Ron Howards 'Heart of the Sea'.
Been a really cool experience out there, seeing the sets get build. You feel a different type of connection with the movie I believe. Just gorgeous stuff, looks like its going to be a great film!

So.. after drawing whales and ships for..a bit of time.. I had to get some machines out of the system, while having the time to test some different techniques.
Hope you enjoy!
I should mention this design is heavily influenced by Aaron Beck + Greg Broadmore and their awesome collaboration with BLR on Keloid II Check that stuff out!

Btw if you have an art blog using blogspot, watch out for uploading .jpgs.. looks like blogger messes with the colors. Seems you can avoid this by uploading a .png instead... silly blogspot.

Captain Phillips

Finally got the chance to watch Paul Greengrass's 'Captain Phillips' and really enjoyed it!
I've been lucky to work on a lot of cool films with beautiful vfx, but unfortunately a lot of times these type of films rely more on the wow-effect and spectacle, than characters and storytelling.
Captain Phillips felt like a 'good ol movie' to me, the setting is very unique and there is a sense of real depth to the characters.
I read tons of iterations of the script while I was working on the storyboards, and still the film held at the edge of my seat. Go watch it!

Tanner Sack

My concept bro Jamie Holmes recommended China Mieville 'The Scar' to me 300 times, and I finally got around to reading it! A very rich and inspiring universe, and some fresh air from all the space sci-fi I usually read. :)
Here my take on one of the main characters, the remade slave Tanner Sack.

HAZE

Painting from tonight, had this idea/image burning in my head all day. I guess its what happens when you get cramped in a small room with 3 computers two cintiqs and no aircon, on the one super hot day in the UK.
The style is inspired by the badasses at Blackbird Interactive and their art for Hardware, it's also inspired by Alberto Mielgo, who is also badass.
Hope you enjoy!

Bomber Tutorial

Hi, my first proper tutorial!
Its not super in depth, and require some decent knowledge of photoshop, but it has a lot of the tricks I've learned over the years and is my current 'go-to' method.
I paint in different ways a lot, as I like to explore and find it more relaxing, but this has proven to be a pretty stable method so far.
Hope you enjoy!

The Clear Air Turbulence, sketches and chars

Just finished 'Consider Phlebas' by the late Iain M Banks.
Did this design based on the 'Clear Air Turbulence' spaceship. Not really based on the description in the book, but more of the images that came to mind when introduced to the characters on board, and the actions they go through.

Also a couple of preliminary warm up sketches and some characters I forgot to post.

Hope you enjoy!
