Brutal Legend!

Hey, Brutal Legend is OUT! BUY IT! PLAY IT! OR DIE!

I'm super excited about this you have no idea! There's a couple of reasons for that. First off because of Grim Fandango and Psychonauts and Full Throttle and everything else Tim Schafer has been involved in.
Can't get enough of the imagination, humour and clever writing. And the ART. oh man each game with its own distinct style matching the universe of the games.
So yeah I'm a huge Double Fine fanboi geek dude. deal with it and join me.

I was psyched when I got to work on Brutal Legend as part of an internship a couple of years back, and it was an amazing experience. I want to thank everyone who made that possible, and the great people at DF who had the patience to work with me. You guys are awesome.
The skin on my fingers has grown back over the years, so don't worry.

Im very proud to have been the tiniest part of this, and today Im gonna share some of that work with you.

Ophelias' behind. I was blessed with the task to carefully place each of those vertices after tons of research and guidance from the art and animation teams.
I know. This screenshot alone is enough for you to run to the nearest game dealer, but just in case check out some brutal trailer, track list and interviews.

I'll see you on the battlefields of Metal!
(when I can afford a xboxstaion5..)

The Hunt

Trying out custom brushes some more. Super fun stuff.

Also I finally beat Dead Space. Must admit that I kinda had to force myself through the end, I really enjoyed the first half, but then it went down a way too familiar road in both story and level design.
Still the first half was awesome, and if you are into getting scared shitless in space, give it a shot!

More naked people!

Ok. So I'm trying to keep regular at the shoreditch lifedrawing society. Its good fun. If you are in London you should check it out.
Here are some from the last couple of sessions. This blog needs more spaceships and robots now I think.

You might have thumbs. But you still got a long way ahead of you!

Human...

I saw the E3 prelude for Mass Effect2 and just needed to draw some alien lifeforms.
I really dug how well designed everything in that game was, it felt like a living world where aliens has trends and style.

Also I'm playing Dead Space atm. I'm really enjoying it. or it scares the living crap out of me. which is enjoyable.
Story is quite cliche and kinda cheesy, but theres just something about long dark tunnels inside a giant space ship filled with flickering lights and monsters.

Ok. bedtime.

ST-4 'The Cat'

The ST-4 (originally dubbed 'ST Humming Bird') was produced in massive numbers at short notice towards the end of the war.
It had extremely low production cost and was used for both scout recon missions and combat.

But due to the rush in production, it suffered from a fatal flaw in balance, and ranked as the most common ship to spontaneously crash in the fleet.
Apparently this was halfway foreseen by the designers of the ST-4 as it featured the best eject and life support systems.
Over time it was nicknamed 'The Cat' by pilots surviving up to 9 crashes in the ST-4.

Edit: just tweaked the cockpit a bit and added the process ^^

journey sketckbook

Ok so a lot of stuff has happened lately. I was in Aberystwyth Wales, and would like to thank the ffresh (ha..ha) people there for a wonderful time.
Thank you very much for having me there, and arranging a great festival!

Also I just got back from a quick trip to Amsterdam with the mpc layout crew, which was awesome. Would love to go back there whenever I get the chance. Thanks to the team for pulling together and making it happen, it was great!

Here are some spy sketches of people I know, and some people I dont know.

story keys and thoughts on inspiration

So here's some story keys from a project I've been working on for way too long.
By working I mean, being unsatisfied with my skills and avoiding showing anything from it, feeling I'm not able to create something that represents what I want to achieve properly. Guess what.
That is really dumb. I'm amazed how dumb I am sometimes.

Anyhow, I did some sketches of this back in school a couple of years ago, and it seems one of my former classmates and a very good friend of mine unconsciously got quite inspired by a particular design concept, and used it recently in his teams most excellent steampunk contest entry.
I guess it was a good thing, because it really shook me up, and now I feel I pretty much have to show this, just to make sure that if I one day should manage to get the project going and look the way I want, I'm not going to look like a ripoff of something I originally came up with.
Such tricky stuff..

I think our approach, context, compositions and emotions are quite different, and theres probably room enough in the world for more than one Dali-legged-boat walking between islands in a sea of fog.
Mine is a organic creature-vehicle capable of travelling between the astral planes in the story I'm working on.
If you want to see the original drawing for this, and check out my old workspace at school, you can try and take a look here.

This sequence shows the main protagonist being picked up by Charon at the bank of the river Styx and taken to the underworld.
I came up with this sweet thing about a hooded dude picking up dead people by a river for coins, and ferry them to the land of the dead(c)
pretty cool eh? Oops..
ehm... bear in mind this is a very small part of a larger complex story, but the design and idea of the underworld and how to get there, is something I would like to be able to say 'I came up with this'.

So all I want do really, is to get these out there, and continue to work with the story and design, as a lot of it is still very loose.
Also I would appreciate thoughts and feedback on these.

I don't care where people get their ideas, as long as they make something awesome and give credit, where credits due.
I was lucky that Andreas is an awesome guy, and he agreed to give a thanks in the credits.
Thanks a lot man! I hope you dudes win!

Ok, bit of rambling there, just had to get of my mind.
Thanks for reading if you did.
Take care.

Boiler

Hello everyone,

The Ffresh film festival taking place in Aberystwyth Wales, will be screening Hum as part of their International program from the 11th -13th of February.

I will be there and take part in a small panel session with Johnny Kelly and Joseph Pierce telling a little bit about what I'm up to.
Tim Allen is keeping an eye on it, hopefully it will be fun and awesome.
You can read more about it here. And check out Jhonny Kellys short 'Procastination'!

Also Brad Blackbourn the director of photography and head of layout, on 'Tale of Despereaux' has written an in depth article over at Vfxworld.
Loads of interesting points from a clever guy.
Check it out.

Ok thats it. Here's a giant boiler.

Also check out the trailer for BRUTAL LEGEND!!!!11one

The Tale of Despereaux. I saw it.

I finally got to see Tale of Despereaux, and I'm very happy that I got to work on it.
It has a beautiful Flemish inspired look, a classic (tho quite complex) fairytale story, not counting on pop culture references to be funny, and no songs.
But the best thing about it was the cinematography and mind blowing layout.

here's a couple of stills i scavenged from the nets of shots i worked on.
I found one of them with this article on Evgani Tomov, the production designer on the show.

Check it out, and bring your kids.

I bought a scanner.

I actually bought it a while ago, but stuff has been busy lately. With l4d, quakelivebeta and fallout3 coming out and all.

These are from various life drawing sessions in Shoreditch and some bits and pieces from my sketchbook.
man I really wish I bought a faster one. I was so busy looking for resolutions and dpis, i forgot to ask about speed.

More Flybys

Reworked the t16's as I wanted a version with a little more color pang, slowly it turned into an alternate version. Then this other one popped up so i decided to roll with it for a bit.
Also DMDM went really well, Hum took one of the main prizes!
Other news I just completed Bioware's Mass Effect, which was awesome. If you are into kotor and general sci-fi space stuff, and shooting stuff, get it! I hope i forget it soon so i can play it again.

It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back home!

The original T-16 Skyhopper design seems to be a crossbreed between the amazing minds of Colin Cantwell's model making and Ralph Mcquarrie's concecpt art.
hey did you know that the model Luke plays with in A New Hope, was the actual prop miniature? man im such a sucker for this stuff..

Hey also, I'll be in Aarhus, Denmark on the 19th of June, participating in the DMDM -Danish Championship of Digital Media.
Its in Musik Huset, where they will be showing different digital media and there will be a screening of 'Hum'. and its free i think.
see you there. maybe.

Red and Boxbot Responds

oh finally. 'Red and Boxbot Responds' is on the tube. This was a 48hours project done by Andreas N G (Werner) and me, at the stuttgart Red Girl 48hours 3d jam session. All we got was the red girl rig and two computers with photoshop, after effects, premiere, and maya.
-and loads of red bull (disgusting stuff).
afterwards we did some minor tweaks 2 evenings at werner's place, so the story was a bit more clear and polished.
Rene Brokop did a cool score to fit it all together. i hope you dig!

Fast Western!

Ok so Finally FAST WESTERN made it to YOUTUBE.com! This means that you (whoever you are) can enjoy this small animated graphic super adventure western-movie, that me and my formerly fellow students* worked hard on for less than 24 hours a couple of years ago.. all for free! It was traditionally drawn and animated on paper, afterwards scanned in for hours and hours and colored in a program I will never mention by name no more. But now its for the eyes of the world to see. hope you dig. we did.

I bought a new wacom board since I'm no longer in school and can't abuse school equipment.
yes no more school! I graduated last last Thursday and it feels great! So now I can listen to the black keys and paint all day. actually pretty close to what I used to do anyways.. well.

Jack the Ripper.

Hey this one is actually old stuff.. But I felt like making an update, and didn't have any new drawings worth posting. But its ok, because the reason why this was not posted last year, is because I drew it and saved it on a computer home at my parents, and forgot everything about it and where I put the file.
So from the depths of a faraway hard drive, I bring you: Jack the Ripper.

Oh.. Yeah and this is the funniest animation I've seen so far this year:
Purple and Brown.

Snow

I wish there was some snow outside. But no. But there is snow in this painting!
Its sort of a self portrait, so I hope you like it!
Other news: I brought the new Tom Waits Orphans today and it is GREAT! Go get it now!
-Only bad thing is that my stuff always turn brownish when i listen to his stuff.. which happens a lot. hmm..
I got the limited edition with a fine little book inside, man I love the feeling of looking through a new cover full of pictures and lyrics while listening to the music for the first time.
So if you are a musical genius, wondering if you should sell your soul along with a fancy cover.. The answer is yes.
Another thing: My Ally Tauruz and I played war3 tft against the rank 1 arranged team players on Lordaeron today, and got our asses kicked in. -But we did call them N00bs! HA!
Bye.

Monday, November 20, 2006

It seems that my desire for drawing get bigger when I'm doing technical stuff in Maya... Guess it a good thing.
I dont know about this one, it turned a bit corny somehow (hey at least she does not have crap elven ears, or fairy wings)... But its in colors...!

If you still think this post hurt you, listen to some Man or astro-man?! (it helps me and if you don't know them, be happey that you saw this post)

Theres just nothing like drawing naked people!

We had a model last week, and well its been very long since I did this.
(We did have another session a couple weeks before, but that turned so crappy that it did not happen anyway).
I'll post these, and quickly make another update, so they soon vanish into black blogger hole of the past. Hate the naked man while you can!
