Hmm.. I made that last one today. Might post some more last year ramblings, but would like to just fix a couple of things... so its looking a bit bleak. Lets see!

Holidays has been great and quite busy, got a lot more stuff coming up, but it will be a while before it sees the dim light of a monitor online. Stay tuned.

Also I did some imaginative Star Craft 2 units for fun, got excited about the expansion and thought it would be fun to fantasise about what the new units might look like (this was before they were revealed).
I tried to emulate some of the more tooney Blizzard style, really relaxing and fun experiment.

So I did a recording while drawing the last half of this. Sorry I don't have the full thing, will fix this for next time!
I usually try to save my files with some milestones layers, so I can better review the steppes later.
However I never look at the psds later, and I accidentally the layers a lot, so I was looking for another more detailed way to track the process.

I thought a video capture would be more useful as a way to analyse my somewhat random speedpaint process.
And then why not share it? Because its terrible you say? Well yes, but I want to start streaming and creating more active art content, so gotta start somewhere.

Since a video on its own is pretty boring I added a commentary. Its pretty bad... sorry. please feel free to mute it. My mic is terrible, and I mumble and repeat a lot... will look into getting a better mic and brain for next time. Unless I die from sheer embarrassment. Please feel free to leave any feedback in comments, or requests btw.

Anyways I love watching this kind of videos (done right) by other artists, seeing what weird little tricks they use, have a peak inside their brain and maybe learn something. So I hope you can somewhat enjoy my first clumsy attempt at making one!

I'm still figuring out video compression stuff, so please bear with the low quality for now. OK JUST WATCH THE !%#%!^ VIDEO CONVERTING THIS SHIT TOOK FRIKIN AGES TO MAKE!

Junk Love concepts

Hey,
Here are some of the concepts I did for director Nikolaj Feifers 'Junk Love' little over a year ago.
Its a Danish sci-fi short done on a tiny buget as part of the Danish film school graduation films.
I had a lot of fun working on this, even though it was very tight for time and everything I did was done in my spare time, it was inspiring to feel the passion from the small crew and see how they managed to pull this together.

Jumper

Hey here is something I've been chipping away at the last couple of nights.

The Jumper was a primary reconnaissance mech from the earlier days of walker warfare.

Jet pods enables high jumps and temporary hovering for scouting.
Armaments removed to decrease fuel consumption/weight and increase jump range.
Different weapons available at key positions, for quick attachment, should combat arise.

Junk Love Teaser and face studies

Here is a small teaser for something I worked on a while ago. Its from the poster for the Danish Sci-fi graduation short 'JUNK LOVE' directed by Nikolaj B. Feifer and produced by Mikkel Jersin.
I did concepts for it last year, and I'm super excited to see how it has turned out, watch teasers here!

It Premieres the 10th of June at the Danish filmschool.

I'll throw up more stuff after the premiere!

Also some quickish face studies done over the last couple of evenings.

Roughly 30mins each, tho some of the girls took longer. Males are a lot easier for me to draw, I guess its because the skull is more clearly defined so when you are constructing, you are already getting some likeness. And you can be a lot more rough. Girls seem to have no skulls, are super smooth and they wear makeup and shit arrgh!

The pictures are from a really cool site I found quite a while ago. It had tons of pictures of people at different parties, really good quality too, many seemed to be taken before people could really react or pose for it, which gave some great natural results.
Unfortunately I lost the link and I haven't been able to find it again, so I can't give credit, and now I'm running out of reference.
So if you know of any good sites for photography of people please send me a message or put it in the comments!

Mudbox! Weird alien Batman and sketches.

One of my colleagues recently introduced me to Autodesk Mudbox, and I got really excited about it.

Its pretty much what I always felt like modelling should be. Its very intuitive, and if you know maya already, very easy to jump into and get sculpting right away. Fun stuff!

I've done something that could be some weird alien Batman. If Batman was a movie like The Fly, that took place in the Mass Effect universe... yeah..

Also some quick speedpaints and a study done over the last couple of evenings.

2hour study of Sargents 'Henrik James'. Doesn't do either Henrik or Sargent much justice, but it was fun and felt like good practice.

I've been mixing up my brushes lately, with different sets I've found online.
Currently I'm using some from the "Fine Arts Brushes Vol 1" alot, which where created by Jan Ditlev, very cool stuff.

Super creepy and long lost brother of the Chestfarter.
The Lunger is packed with contagious disease. Slow but never resting, it will find you by scent.
Weak points, belly and legs. Belly will explode in a shower of contagious goo, so avoid close quarters and shotguns. Listen for dry cough, and heavy breathing.

Also if you haven't played Amnesia The Dark Decent by now, I suggest you get going. Most scary game I've played in 2010.

Hey, way behind on the scanning of these, I always want to scan them and update, but then I get home from a session and I feel like 'I've done enough for today' so I just play starcraft2 instead.
All of a sudden, a new book is full, and scanning takes ageses..

They are from the last 3 months or so. Some from the last sessions I had at MPC, and new ones from a nice new venue in Angel.

Also I had the chance to check out 'Paul' (new movie by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) this weekend.
Some of my sci-fi images are featured as part of the 'cosmic flashbacks' and although you barely notice them, deep inside the unconscious, they will leave a scorching mark on your brain, making you crave more sci-fi arts!
Movie was pretty good too, tho Shaun of the Dead is still my favourite from the duo.

So much has happened since last time. I've been crazy busy with projects and has also moved to a new job.
Exciting times! Now located at Double Negative.

Here is Bio space guy, evolved to withstand living on his super hazardous poisons gas planet, and farting through his chest.

Also I have to share this leaving present from the layout team at MPC. Its a plush toy designed and hand crafted by no other than Sandra Murta herself.

BunnySaurus! It has signatures from all the layout team members stitched into it and is the best leaving present I could imagine! I'm going to make a fortune on Ebay!

Quake II Berserker

I bring you, the super badass evil zombie cyborg from space...
The Berserker from idsoftware Quake II!

This guy, his friends and I spend a lot of time together back in 1997.
I used to play quakeworld online as a young teenager, and when Quake II was on its way, I was super excited to play it.
How would the weapons from the screenshots work? What kind of strange world was it taking place in, and could I beat it on hard before my friends?

I instantly loved it, it was just the kind of fast paced fun I was hoping for. Each enemy with its distinct functions, strengths and weaknesses. But what made it so fun?

Once you understand how the enemies and weapons work, it becomes a very fun challenge to use the right weapon, in the right location, at the right time to defeat a room full of scary monsters.

Like running up to a very dangerous foe like the Berserker, triggering his deadly melee attack animation, giving you just enough time to pull back at the right moment, and blow him to bits with the super shotgun, while the Sonic Mayhem soundtrack applause the execution. As a teenage nerd addicted to adrenaline, it was pretty pumped.

I didn't pay much attention to the story, but in 1997 anything with a lone soldier battling his way through a strange alien world full of evil cyborg zombie monsters would do.
Actually it still does.

Looking at it now, even with some years on the back, I still find the look and feel of the game interesting.

So I thought it would be fun to take a stab at one of my old favorite enemies, the Berserker. He'll run up to you and bash your head in, or send you flying through the air in no time. When you look at his design, it is very clear that you don't want this guy up close.

Technology was leaping forward in 1997 and with TWICE the polygon count per character of Quake1, it made for some great visuals. Making those few polygons count, the silhouettes communicates very well, making it easy to quickly identify different enemies, while running through a room of flying body parts. I wanted to try and keep that clear visual style in my interpretation but also add the level of detail games of today offer.

The level design in Quake II might not make that much sense, but as a tourist of doom on a strange planet, inhabited only by evil cyborg zombie alien robots with the only goal in life to patrol a room, and kill anyone who is not a evil cyborg zombie alien robot, it wasn't a big deal.

Compared to some of the games I see today, Quake II had a pleasant simplicity which makes the player focus on gameplay rather than getting confused by overwhelming details.
Not that I think detailing is bad, I do spend ages running around checking out set dressing, and how clever many level designers are with how little is given them to work with. But some games have a tendency to get lost in that, and its probably one of the reasons why I prefer such clearly designed games like Half-Life2, Painkiller and Team Fortress and keep coming back to play them.

Anyways enough with the rambling, dig out your old quake II disc and have a go, or if you never played it check it out on stream. Just found this, which I thought was kinda fun too..
Maybe we can play some htmel5quake2 in the soon future.

Might do some more quake dudes, had a blast drawing this guy.

Got back from a small holiday in Denmark, great times! So good to meet up with old friends and familiy again.

We even managed to drag our corpses to the sketchcrawl #27at the Danish National Gallery after 5 days of instant partying.

man drawing while hungover is hard. But kinda interesting too, it feels like your brain has been set back to a previous state, and a lot of the knowlegde you use when describing form is lost. I felt I was relying more on simple tricks to try and make it look 'ok' rather than really studying the form. Something I see happening in my drawings when I'm sober too, and really want to avoid.

Here's my first drawing in the morning of our table before we left.

However it was really good fun, and I did feel like experimenting a bit more (what was there too loose?) and it was great to see how many people turned up for the event, I think we were around 15 people, a lot of really good artists. I just felt bad about the way I smelled.

On my way home my flight got delayed (why does this always happen when I'm in good time?) and with my brains slightly regenerated due to moms cooking I got a bit more sketching done.

Hey,
We went to the V&A for some easter break sketching. There is a great atmosphere in the Cast Courts, it feels like the massive statues are simply so impressive that people only dare to whisper. Great place to really sit down and focus. Good times.

Also here are some life drawings from the last couple of months, the more I do this the more interesting it gets, I only wish I've done it more when I was back in school. Only one way to make up for it.

Bogdan Yevheniy Ukrainian astronaut and music lover

Bogdan Yevheniy returns after 4 days in the zero gravity 'tumbler', as part of his training for the Ukrainian space program 1963.

He later took part in a secret program and went into space using unknown age-preventing technology. Rumors has it he is still transmitting messages from deep space, and has learned to master the 10 traditional Ukrainian instruments he took with him, as his only special request.

We where a small gang of 5 who met up in the rain at Sloane Square Saturday morning. We later found shelter and new victims at the Victoria and Albert museum.

It was great meeting old and new faces, and interesting to discuss thoughts and share ideas on drawing in between sketching. Very refueling. Looking forward to next time!

While drawing this I kept the challenge mode running in the background so i could easily tab in, become batman and kick ass for 5-15mins and then return with fresh eyes.

Hey, Brutal Legend is OUT! BUY IT! PLAY IT! OR DIE!

I'm super excited about this you have no idea! There's a couple of reasons for that. First off because of Grim Fandango and Psychonauts and Full Throttle and everything else Tim Schafer has been involved in.
Can't get enough of the imagination, humour and clever writing. And the ART. oh man each game with its own distinct style matching the universe of the games.
So yeah I'm a huge Double Fine fanboi geek dude. deal with it and join me.

I was psyched when I got to work on Brutal Legend as part of an internship a couple of years back, and it was an amazing experience. I want to thank everyone who made that possible, and the great people at DF who had the patience to work with me. You guys are awesome.
The skin on my fingers has grown back over the years, so don't worry.

Im very proud to have been the tiniest part of this, and today Im gonna share some of that work with you.

Human...

I saw the E3 prelude for Mass Effect2 and just needed to draw some alien lifeforms.
I really dug how well designed everything in that game was, it felt like a living world where aliens has trends and style.

Also I'm playing Dead Space atm. I'm really enjoying it. or it scares the living crap out of me. which is enjoyable.
Story is quite cliche and kinda cheesy, but theres just something about long dark tunnels inside a giant space ship filled with flickering lights and monsters.

ST-4 'The Cat'

The ST-4 (originally dubbed 'ST Humming Bird') was produced in massive numbers at short notice towards the end of the war.
It had extremely low production cost and was used for both scout recon missions and combat.

But due to the rush in production, it suffered from a fatal flaw in balance, and ranked as the most common ship to spontaneously crash in the fleet.
Apparently this was halfway foreseen by the designers of the ST-4 as it featured the best eject and life support systems.
Over time it was nicknamed 'The Cat' by pilots surviving up to 9 crashes in the ST-4.

Ok so a lot of stuff has happened lately. I was in Aberystwyth Wales, and would like to thank the ffresh (ha..ha) people there for a wonderful time.
Thank you very much for having me there, and arranging a great festival!

Also I just got back from a quick trip to Amsterdam with the mpc layout crew, which was awesome. Would love to go back there whenever I get the chance. Thanks to the team for pulling together and making it happen, it was great!

story keys and thoughts on inspiration

So here's some story keys from a project I've been working on for way too long.
By working I mean, being unsatisfied with my skills and avoiding showing anything from it, feeling I'm not able to create something that represents what I want to achieve properly. Guess what.
That is really dumb. I'm amazed how dumb I am sometimes.

Anyhow, I did some sketches of this back in school a couple of years ago, and it seems one of my former classmates and a very good friend of mine unconsciously got quite inspired by a particular design concept, and used it recently in his teams most excellent steampunk contest entry.
I guess it was a good thing, because it really shook me up, and now I feel I pretty much have to show this, just to make sure that if I one day should manage to get the project going and look the way I want, I'm not going to look like a ripoff of something I originally came up with.
Such tricky stuff..

I think our approach, context, compositions and emotions are quite different, and theres probably room enough in the world for more than one Dali-legged-boat walking between islands in a sea of fog.
Mine is a organic creature-vehicle capable of travelling between the astral planes in the story I'm working on.

This sequence shows the main protagonist being picked up by Charon at the bank of the river Styx and taken to the underworld.
I came up with this sweet thing about a hooded dude picking up dead people by a river for coins, and ferry them to the land of the dead(c)
pretty cool eh? Oops..
ehm... bear in mind this is a very small part of a larger complex story, but the design and idea of the underworld and how to get there, is something I would like to be able to say 'I came up with this'.

So all I want do really, is to get these out there, and continue to work with the story and design, as a lot of it is still very loose.
Also I would appreciate thoughts and feedback on these.

I don't care where people get their ideas, as long as they make something awesome and give credit, where credits due.
I was lucky that Andreas is an awesome guy, and he agreed to give a thanks in the credits.

Hello everyone,

The Ffresh film festival taking place in Aberystwyth Wales, will be screening Hum as part of their International program from the 11th -13th of February.

I will be there and take part in a small panel session with Johnny Kelly and Joseph Pierce telling a little bit about what I'm up to.
Tim Allen is keeping an eye on it, hopefully it will be fun and awesome.

The Tale of Despereaux. I saw it.

I finally got to see Tale of Despereaux, and I'm very happy that I got to work on it.
It has a beautiful Flemish inspired look, a classic (tho quite complex) fairytale story, not counting on pop culture references to be funny, and no songs.
But the best thing about it was the cinematography and mind blowing layout.

here's a couple of stills i scavenged from the nets of shots i worked on.
I found one of them with this article on Evgani Tomov, the production designer on the show.

Reworked the t16's as I wanted a version with a little more color pang, slowly it turned into an alternate version. Then this other one popped up so i decided to roll with it for a bit.
Also DMDM went really well, Hum took one of the main prizes!
Other news I just completed Bioware's Mass Effect, which was awesome. If you are into kotor and general sci-fi space stuff, and shooting stuff, get it! I hope i forget it soon so i can play it again.

Red and Boxbot Responds

oh finally. 'Red and Boxbot Responds' is on the tube. This was a 48hours project done by Andreas N G (Werner) and me, at the stuttgart Red Girl 48hours 3d jam session. All we got was the red girl rig and two computers with photoshop, after effects, premiere, and maya.
-and loads of red bull (disgusting stuff).
afterwards we did some minor tweaks 2 evenings at werner's place, so the story was a bit more clear and polished.
Rene Brokop did a cool score to fit it all together. i hope you dig!

Hey fine folks. man so much has happened since last update. i missed you.
Hum took the first prize at the Sicarm International Contest in Murcia, and i got to go there, it was awesome.

Hum will also be screening at this year Danish Filmfestival in Odense, and ill be there the 29th of August. hope to see you (and finally find out if anybody reads this, and who YOU are).
it will be screening the 28th at 11am and 29th at 19pm. and its free!

I started working too, now im located at Framestore CFC in London, so if London is where you lurk around, lets hang out.

Ok so Finally FAST WESTERN made it to YOUTUBE.com! This means that you (whoever you are) can enjoy this small animated graphic super adventure western-movie, that me and my formerly fellow students* worked hard on for less than 24 hours a couple of years ago.. all for free! It was traditionally drawn and animated on paper, afterwards scanned in for hours and hours and colored in a program I will never mention by name no more. But now its for the eyes of the world to see. hope you dig. we did.
